Gino Iannucci: 30 Years of Untouchable Style

Back in 1996, you were rewinding Mouse for the third time that day. There was that one line — Gino, a New York street, a few tricks strung together in near-total silence. Nothing superhuman on paper. And still, you couldn't quite explain what you'd just watched.

Mouse - 1996: five minutes nobody had a word for

Girl Skateboards' Mouse, 1996, went off like a cluster bomb. Eric Koston was in it. Guy Mariano too. Every part had its own thing, its own energy. And then Gino came on.

The difference hit you right away, even if at 16 you couldn't put words to it. Koston built tricks the way architects build towers — precision, logic, impact. Gino looked like he was stumbling onto his tricks by accident, with a grace that made the whole thing feel almost unfair. A nosegrind on some random ledge. A nollie switch off a nothing curb. The same line run back five times through New York streets, with variations nobody had ever seen.

His style — that's the word everybody reached for. But "style" says nothing. What was really going on with Gino was pure economy. Not one extra movement. Not one wasted flail of the arms. The board did what it had to do, and Gino just stood there on top of it, hands in his pockets.

New York isn't California

Gino Iannucci was born in New York in 1974. That detail matters more than it looks. In the '90s, pro skating orbited California — San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco. That's where the brands were, where mythical spots like EMB and Hubba Hideout served as cathedrals.

New York was its own thing. The streets are different out there — tighter, filthier, way less forgiving. Curbs don't come waxed. Spots vanish overnight. Brooklyn Banks lived in a permanent standoff with the cops. Skating New York in the '90s meant fighting for every single line.

Gino came up in that before joining Girl Skateboards and landing in California. He kept something from that hard school — a way of reading spots without waiting for them to be perfect, of finding the line in what nobody else even saw.

Yeah Right - 2003: the quiet peak

If Mouse put Gino on the map, Yeah Right - 2003 set him in stone. That Girl video, directed by Spike Jonze, is one of the most important ever made. It was built like a film, not a trick reel.

Gino's part was built around New York, its streets, its broken-down spaces. Not a lot of spectacular tricks, at least not the way contest skating uses the word. A lot of thought-out lines, spots pulled out of the city's ordinary, moves that looked like they just happened. The fakie nosegrind held a fraction of a second too long — the fraction that makes the whole thing. The switch frontside boardslide on a rail nobody else would have bothered waxing.

What made the part stick is that it never tried to. Gino never posed. The camera followed him and caught what happened, no drama, no epic soundtrack. Just skating, done by somebody who didn't need to sell you on it.

Career

After the silence: still around, never loud

Gino Iannucci never had a "comeback." He never really left. He just kept skating at his own pace while the industry around him turned into a machine of contests, million-dollar sponsors and sponsored posts.

What's interesting about him is the total absence of posturing. He never played the nostalgia card — the whole "man, the '90s were better" routine. He never tried to reinvent himself either, switching up his style to chase trends. He skates the way he's always skated, and that's enough.

At Girl and Chocolate, he's still the benchmark. Not a statue — a living one. The brands' young riders grow up with his parts running in their heads. Maybe that's the real mark of the greats — not the influence you claim, but the one people absorb without noticing.

In a skate world that has usually rewarded the spectacular — highest, hardest, most measurable — Gino always skated on different ground. Not easier. Different. He proved you could be one of the best without ever having to back it up with a number or a trophy.

That's why you're still rewinding it today.
