230 Pounds on a Board: Why Cordano Russell's Rio Win Is No Fluke

On Sunday, August 9, a 22-year-old Canadian shut the Maracanãzinho right up. Cordano Russell closed out the SLS Rio Takeover at 27.5, five days after his birthday, ahead of two Brazilians and a building packed with people who came to watch the opposite happen. We already covered how the final came down to the very last trick. What's left to explain is why this guy wins — him, the build street skating isn't supposed to produce — and what it actually shifts between now and December.

Five days after turning 22, he drops the highest score of the contest

Run the sequence back, because it tells you everything. Giovanni Vianna blows his first attempts, comes back with a 9.1 then a 9.2, and takes the lead with one trick left. The Maracanãzinho is on its feet. Russell has one last attempt. He puts down a 9.3 — the biggest score of the day, men's and women's combined. Vianna goes again right after him and falls.

The official podium published by the league is clear-cut: Russell 27.5, Giovanni Vianna 26.9, Wallace Gabriel 24.5. On the women's side, Rayssa Leal takes it at home with 20.9 ahead of Momiji Nishiya (20.7) and Spain's Daniela Terol (17.7).

That's his second SLS win. The first was Cleveland, last year. In between: an 8th place in Sydney in February, a 17th in Paris, an 8th at the Super Crown in São Paulo. Nothing that pointed toward Rio. Which is exactly what makes the result interesting.

230 pounds and a football past: the profile the circuit doesn't produce

Pull up Cordano Russell's Wikipedia page: 6-foot-4, 232 pounds. Read that again. On a circuit where the standard build hovers somewhere around 5-foot-7 and 130 pounds, that's a complete anomaly.

The backstory matches. Born in London, Ontario, moved to Missouri at four, then to Carlsbad, California at eight — at his own request, because that's where skateboarding happens. In high school, he played football. The International Olympic Committee summed it up with a line that still sticks to him: the 230-pound football player who became Canada's best skateboarder. 4th at the street World Championships in Tokyo in 2023, selected for Paris 2024, dual American-Canadian citizen, enrolled in finance in San Diego.

That's what was on the line in Rio, not just a trophy. Eight finalists, five Brazilians, a crowd screaming for their own, and one guy who checks none of the expected boxes — not the build, not the country, not favorite status. When he stomps that last attempt, he's not flipping a points hierarchy. He's flipping an idea: the one where we all know what a winning skater is supposed to look like.

42% of his skating in fakie: the stat that explains Rio

His official profile on the league's site shows a stat sheet almost nobody is going to read — and it's the key to all of this. Stance breakdown: 42.08% fakie, 38.91% regular, 16.29% nollie, 2.72% switch. Translation: the guy skates backwards more often than forwards.

In a format built on seven standalone tricks, with no run to smooth out the score, that changes everything. The rider who only has one direction dialed starts going in circles after three attempts. The one who can flip into fakie has an entire second bag to pull from, and he can open it right when everyone else starts repeating themselves. Add the rate posted on that same profile — 75.11% of tricks landed — and you've got the portrait of a skater who doesn't gamble: he places his shots.

And then there's the venue. A round arena from 1954, built for volleyball and boxing, packed with people singing in Portuguese for five of the eight finalists. The noise doesn't settle: it spins. You hear the room before you see the obstacle. Skating in there when you're the only one nobody's chanting for is its own kind of test — and that's the noise Russell put his 9.3 down in.

What this win actually changes: a spot, not a trophy

Here's the answer, and it isn't a sentimental one. The league laid out two routes into the Super Crown, its world final: the Arena route (top 12 men and top 6 women in the Arena standings) and the Takeover route (top 8 men and top 4 women in the Takeover standings). A skater who qualifies through both frees up a spot, which rolls down to the next name in the Takeover standings.

Russell was sitting 7th in the Arena standings with 14 points — in, but with zero margin. Rio hands him a second door. In the Takeover standings published by the league, he now sits in the top three with 10 points, tied with Juni Kang and Toa Sasaki. He's no longer a hopeful chasing a spot: he's a qualifier managing one.

The detail that matters going forward: Vianna stays 3rd in the Arena standings and Angelo Caro 4th, while Ginwoo Onodera leads with 20 points. In other words, the season's hierarchy didn't move in Rio — the list of qualifiers did. A Takeover win doesn't make you a champion, it locks in a ticket. And with three stops left, a ticket is worth more than one more podium.

What's next: Tempe on August 29, then Paris and Tokyo

Twenty days. That's what separates Rio from the Tempe stop, August 29 at the Mullett Arena. The league is selling it as a back-to-the-roots moment: Arizona is where SLS held its very first contest. Then Paris — Roland-Garros, the season's only European stop, on October 3 — then Tokyo at the Ariake Arena on November 14, and one last date in Brazil in December.

For Russell, the question is no longer whether he can win a contest. It's whether he can do it again outside of his moment. Rio answered the first one. Tempe will answer the second.
