World Skate Games ASU26: the Asunción Worlds that carries the most weight in the LA28 race

From October 2 to 18, 2026, Asunción hosts the 5th edition of the World Skate Games. More than 10,000 athletes and staff, around a hundred nations, 12 sports and 23 World Championships in the Paraguayan capital. For skateboarding, this isn't just another stop on the calendar: it's the biggest date on the board since the LA28 Olympic window cracked open on June 11.

Why Asunción hits harder than any other stop in 2026

On June 11, 2026, World Skate opened the Olympic qualification window for Los Angeles 2028. It stays open until June 11, 2028. Rome fired the first shot: Park at Ostia from June 10 to 14, Street at Colle Oppio from June 17 to 21. 385 skaters entered, 61 nations, $400,000 in prize money. One number to keep from those two weeks in Rome: Sora Shirai walked away with a 49,351-point lead in men's Street.

Asunción is the next stop — and it hands out World Champion titles, Park and Street. On this circuit, a Worlds is a different animal from a regular World Cup. The World Skateboarding Ranking points that come out of it will still count when the Phase 1 axe falls on March 31, 2028. After that, only the top 44 per discipline and per gender stay in the game.

What's really on the line in Asunción isn't one more trophy in a case. It's the pecking order locking in — or cracking wide open. Shirai and Mizuho Hasegawa show up with leads that look like walls. Toa Sasaki, two-time world champion, is coming off a rough two weeks in Rome where he landed one run out of three and one best trick out of three. Coco Yoshizawa, Olympic gold in Paris, didn't land a thing. Eighteen months left. At this level, a Worlds you botch doesn't get fixed in two contests.

Park October 3-10, Street October 11-18: the official skate schedule

Good news for anyone who wants dates on the calendar: the skate window is out, discipline by discipline. Vert kicks things off from September 29 to October 3, on the esplanade of the López Palace — so before the October 2 opening ceremony even happens. Park runs October 3 to 10 at the COP cluster Skate Park, Street October 11 to 18 at the Street Skate Park, and Slalom October 14 to 17 on the Lambaré hill.

One honest caveat: that schedule is stamped "version 03" and flagged provisional. World Skate says in black and white that "minimal modifications" are still possible. The exact run times haven't dropped yet. Another thing worth noting: where the October 2025 announcement mentioned San Bernardino and Altos as satellite cities, the latest version of the schedule says every event will be held inside Asunción. Phase 1, top 44, Q-Series: the actual road to Los Angeles

The system breaks down into two stages. Phase 1: everything that pays WSR points through March 31, 2028, Asunción included. When it closes, the top 44 in each discipline and each gender move on. Phase 2: the IOC Q-Series in spring 2028, plus additional events World Skate will add, all carrying the same points weight.

A detail plenty of people missed in July: the IOC specified that skateboarding only appears at 3 of the 4 Q-Series stops. Tokyo (May 4-7, 2028), Montreal (June 1-4) and Orlando (June 8-11) will each host a Park qualifier. Only Tokyo adds a Street qualifier on top. In other words, for a Street skater, Phase 2 comes down to basically one window — which makes every point scraped together in Phase 1, and therefore in Asunción, that much more expensive. The French riders: what we know, and what we don't yet

Let's be straight. In the ranking recaps World Skate published after Rome — the ones naming, one by one, the skaters climbing and the ones falling — not a single French rider shows up. Not in Park, not in Street. That's not a verdict, it's a fact: the international federation put forward Japanese riders, Americans, an Australian, a Brazilian, a Chinese rider, an Argentine, an Italian. No French flag anywhere. And that's exactly why Asunción isn't neutral ground. A Worlds in South America means a time zone close to Brazil, a climate close to Brazil, a crowd speaking the same language as half the field. The Brazilian scene is effectively playing at home, and it's arriving hot. For a French rider, that's not a logistics footnote: it's a long haul, jet lag to swallow and a crowd that won't be in your corner. The kind of setting where a good result counts double on the résumé.

Asunción in October: the whole city turns into one giant park

October in Paraguay is spring in the southern hemisphere: hot, humid, with pavement that holds the heat well into the evening. For sixteen days, the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, the National Sports Secretariat, the port of Asunción and the Costanera all turn into one big playground. Roller derby in a gym, downhill on the Lambaré hill, street on fresh concrete, and riders crossing paths in flip-flops between runs everywhere you look. This isn't a contest: it's a city switching tempo.

Gear-wise, anyone making the trip as a spectator already knows Park doesn't forgive: a certified helmet and a set of wheels built for the bowl are the bare minimum if you plan on skating out there between sessions in the stands. Paraguay doesn't have the skateshop density of a European capital just yet.

The detailed program — run times, entry lists by nation, broadcast setup — isn't out yet. It'll land in the coming weeks on World Skate's official channels. What's locked in, though: two world champion titles, Park and Street, get decided down there, and they'll count all the way to 2028.
