Carlos Garcia Takes the Top Division Ahead of 6 Riders
The open division, the one where everybody 17 and over ends up, came down to seven entries. Seven. That's the size of a Saturday session with your crew. Carlos Garcia, 21, took the win — he was the highest-rated rider in the field on The Boardr's world ranking, and it showed. Behind him, a curveball : Augusto Fernandes, out of Culver City, grabbed 2nd place at 16 years old, in a division reserved for riders 17 and up. The youngest guy in the field finished ahead of six dudes older than him, including one who's 31.

The Scores? They Don't Exist. Here's What The Boardr Posts Instead

Let's get this out of the way now to spare you the disappointment : The Boardr doesn't publish any numerical scores for its series stops. No 8.4 out of ten, no line-by-line judging sheet like an SLS broadcast built for TV. What the organization puts online is each division's final ranking, the riders' ages, and where they sit on its in-house world ranking.
That ranking is the series' real currency. Fontana was worth 400 points on The Boardr's global scale — the same currency that, stacked up over a full season of stops, decides who goes to the year-end finals in Florida. The judges score on the spot, quick and dirty, and only post the finishing order. It's raw, and nobody at the park is complaining.
James Azpeitia, 19: A Bowl Win and a Street Podium on the Same Day

Four riders entered two divisions in a single day. Only one left with a win AND a podium : James Azpeitia, 19, who took the bowl or mini-ramp for 13 and up after grabbing 3rd place in street in the 17-and-up division. Going from street to transition in the same afternoon and nailing the timing both times — that's the kind of day people are still talking about at the skateshop three years later.
Behind him, Kelley Apanowicz, 15, took 2nd place in the bowl — just hours after finishing 3rd in the 13–16 street division. Brendan Bush, 17, rounded out the podium. Then came Demitry Dupont (31) and David Creamer (23), both already ranked in street. In the 12-and-under division, the bowl went to Greyson Lane, 9 years old, ahead of Hector Gonzalez (11) and Eddie Loucka.
Ages 7 to 15: The Four Podiums That Made Up the Bulk of the Field

In the 13–16 division, Jake Arnold took the win ahead of Ryder Rosenthal (15) and Kelley Apanowicz (15). In the 9–12s, the victory went to Yuito Misumi — 9 years old, the youngest in his division — ahead of Sora Nishitora (12) and Kain Blankenship (10).
In the 8-and-under division, Yoshia Hamada, 7 years old, won ahead of Eddie Loucka. And the girls' 12-and-under division went to Kairi Stanbrook, 12, ahead of Dani Neuppert (8) and Bobbi Rose Garcia (10). Three girls at the start line : that's not many, and it's exactly the gap the US scene has been trying to close for the past five years.
What a The Boardr Series Stop Actually Looks Like
No official footage of the Fontana stop has been released so far — and we're not going to stick you with some bootleg re-upload instead. That said, the organization regularly films its own stops, and the format doesn't change from one city to the next : obstacles set up in a city park, divisions running back to back all day long, parents on the sidelines, and the awards handed out right on the pavement. Here's the Louisville stop, from their official channel.

$0 to Win: Why 21 Riders Still Showed Up at the Park

Here's the answer, and it fits in three lines of the official rundown. One : The Boardr Series used to be called the GFL Series, for Grind for Life — a US registered nonprofit that covers travel expenses for cancer patients who have to go far from home for treatment. Every stop gives back to that organization. You're not skating for a check, you're skating for the common pot.
Two : those 400 points. They're what fill The Boardr's world ranking and decide who goes to the end-of-season finals in Tampa — the same city as the Tampa Pro, except here you get in through the service entrance, one stop at a time. A 9-year-old kid who wins Fontana scores exactly the same way a 31-year-old dude does.
Three, and this is the real thing : the series is open to all ages and all skill levels — it's spelled out in black and white in its own description. Seven divisions, four of them for kids under 16. For a California kid, it's the one doorway where you can show up on a Saturday, grab a bib, and skate in front of judges without a sponsor behind you. The pro circuit you see on TV rests entirely on that foundation — the open qualifiers at the big contests fill up with riders who started exactly like this.
So no, there wasn't a single dollar to pick up in Fontana on August 22. There were 400 points, a fund for people fighting cancer, and 21 skaters aged 7 to 31 who put their boards down on the same starting line. Looked at that way, the check was never the point.
