10 Slept-On Marseille Skate Spots You've Never Seen Filmed

Marseille, sure, you've got the Prado and a rep as the French skate capital that travels way past the border, but the city is still sitting on stuff nobody's ever put on film. Parking structures, forgotten plazas, stairs that lead absolutely nowhere. We went digging.

If you're rolling into Marseille with your board in the bag, here's what you need to know — the spots that actually look good and aren't already blown out on Instagram.

Quai du Vieux-Port — Lower Level

Marseille 1st · Vieux-Port metro (M1)

Intermediate
Cut stone
Best after 9pm

The lower level of the quay, City Hall side. Cut-stone ledges with clean edges — not the touristy steps up top. Hit the bottom quay when the boats are docked and the locals have moved on to something else. Watch the expansion joints between the slabs, they're wide.

Esplanade J4 — MuCEM

Marseille 2nd · Joliette metro (M2)

Smooth concrete
Early morning

The esplanade between the MuCEM and Fort Saint-Jean. Flat concrete, steps at all kinds of heights, low little ledges. Wide-open spot, super exposed — come on a weekday before 9am, before the security guards and the tourists set up shop. The sea view makes up for the thin obstacle count.

Palais Longchamp Forecourt

Marseille 4th · Cinq-Avenues Longchamp metro (M1)

One of the most photogenic spots in town. The forecourt on the walkway side opens onto marble slabs with a few steps and low ledges. That 19th-century architecture in the background makes any trick look good on film. Sunday afternoons the guards are way less present than on weekdays.

La Plaine — Plaza Ledges

Marseille 5th · Castellane metro (M1)

Place Jean-Jaurès after the remodel. Clean granite plaza, a few benches the locals have been waxing for years. Working-class neighborhood energy, real mixed crowd, and nobody's going to tell you to leave as long as you respect the space. Dudes have been sessioning here since 2006 — DIY spots survive.

Around the Vélodrome — South Plaza

Marseille 8th · Rond-Point du Prado metro (M2)

Weekdays, no match

The south plaza at the Orange Vélodrome and all the open ground around it. Smooth concrete, loading ramps, low ledges. Weekdays between 10am and 4pm with no match on, the place is dead. Do not go on game nights — you'll end up in full chaos mode.

Parc Borély — East Paths

Marseille 8th · Bus 83, Borély stop

Clean asphalt
Weekend mornings

Parc Borély and its inner paths on the east side. Clean asphalt with long runs for manuals. Perfect for morning flatground sessions before the park fills up. The paths heading toward the château have some nice little downhills too. More Polar than Thrasher — and that's not a knock.

La Joliette — Euroméditerranée Plazas

The Euroméditerranée district — acres of granite plaza and a handful of interesting architectural hubs. Double-set stairs, low benches, square-edged ledges. It's a spread-out spot, you've got to explore. The granite gets slick when it's damp, otherwise it's fast as hell. Semi-blown-out, but there are still plenty of untouched corners.

Cours Julien — Fountain Ledges

Marseille 6th · Notre-Dame-du-Mont metro (M1)

The Cours Julien and the fountains in the middle. Stone ledges with edges you can actually work. The ground's uneven in places — landing a switch nosegrind here counts double. Alternative-neighborhood vibe, the locals are cool with skating. Skip Friday nights, when the café terraces spill out over everything.

Prado Skatepark

Marseille 8th · seafront, av. du Prado

The real public spot in south Marseille: bowl, obstacles and smooth concrete, a stone's throw from the beach. Busy at all hours, beginners and rippers alike, laid-back atmosphere. Best home base when you're riding the Prado side of town.

Prado Bowl

Marseille 8th · Prado seaside park

The concrete bowl in the seaside park, dropped right between the lawns and the beach. Fast walls, playful transitions, the Mediterranean in the background. A must if you're into carving and tranny, far from the mess downtown.

Before you go: 4 things you need to know

July–August heat means you skate early or late. Before 9am or after 7pm — anything in between and you're standing on concrete in 95-degree heat. June and September give you a lot more room.

Marseille concrete rolls well. Sea air and temperature swings leave the surfaces in better shape than you'd expect. 52–54mm wheels will do the job at most of the spots listed here. For the Goudes downhill, grab something bigger and more stable.

Marseille isn't Paris when it comes to security guards. Less systematic, and people are generally way less hostile toward skating. The unwritten local rule: respect the space, people leave you alone. Wax helps on a few ledges nobody's hit yet.

To hit several spots in one session — rent a bike or a scooter. The RTM network is decent but the evening buses stop running early. Some locals who've been skating since the early 2000s still run night sessions at the Vieux-Port. If you run into them, roll with them instead of going solo.
