Independent, Thunder or Venture — Which truck to choose in 2026?

Rebuilding your setup and stuck on trucks? Normal. It’s the most important part of your board — and the choice between Independent, Thunder, and Venture has divided the community for 40 years. Here’s the honest verdict.

The 3 brands in 30 seconds

Before diving into detail, here’s the raw dashboard. These three brands have dominated the market for decades for a simple reason: they deliver on their promise.

VentureFrom 32€Beginner, smooth transitionUnbeatable entry price

Independent — the indestructible classic

Founded in 1978 in Santa Cruz, Independent Stage 11 are the absolute benchmark trucks. Tony Hawk ripped them for decades. Stacy Peralta put them on every Powell Peralta board. Even today, they equip half the pros on the circuit.

The Stage 11 is the model that changed everything in 2009. Higher pivot, reinforced baseplate, firmer stock Cushion bushings. The result: a truck that turns slower than a Thunder but can take years of grinding without deforming. It’s the choice for riders who skate hard spots — concrete transitions, ceramic bowls, square iron rails.

The only flaw? The price. Indys are consistently the most expensive of the three. And their turning responsiveness is lower than Thunder — if you’re into super technical street skating, you’ll find they respond slower.

Who is it for?

You skate skateparks, ramps, bowls. You want gear that lasts. You ride 8.25″ or wider. Indys are made for you.

Thunder — the street choice

If you street skate, hit granite ledges, stairs, and manuals, Thunder Team are probably the best choice on the market in 2026. Tyshawn Jones rides them. Ishod Wair too. Not just by contract — these guys know what pops best.

Thunder turns faster than Independent at an equivalent lean angle. The pivot geometry is slightly different: the baseplate is lower, the kingpin more accessible, the turning response more immediate. This is what street riders look for — a board that pivots sharply with the slightest front foot pressure.

The flip side: Thunders wear out faster when grinding. The hanger metal is slightly less dense. On a rough granite spot, you’ll see marks appear faster than with Indys. That’s the deal. You pay for responsiveness with durability.

Who is it for?

You street skate, hit urban spots, ledges. You want a board that responds instantly. You ride 8.0″ to 8.5″. Thunder is your truck.

Venture — the best price

Venture have a bad reputation among some experienced skaters. Wrongly so. For a beginner or intermediate skater, it’s probably the smartest setup financially in 2026. Starting from 32€ a pair, you get a solid, reliable truck that won’t bend on the first impact.

Venture geometry offers more stability than Thunder, but less responsiveness. If you’re starting out, that’s exactly what you need — a predictable board that forgives bad landings. Ventures are also excellent for smooth transitions and mini-ramps, where stability trumps quickness.

The limit is real: as you progress to technical street skating, you’ll feel that Ventures respond slower. That’s when to switch to Thunder or Independent. But for your first 12 months of skateboarding, you don’t need to spend more.

The verdict by skateboarding style

Let’s stop beating around the bush. Here’s the clear verdict based on where you skate in 2026:

You pure street skate — ledges, rails, manuals, stairs — get Thunder Team 149. Responsiveness makes the difference on spots that demand last-minute adjustments.

You skate skateparks, bowls, transitions — get Independent Stage 11. Durability and stability in tight turns justify the investment.

You’re a beginner or on a tight budget — get Venture. Invest the money saved in good wheels — that’s where you’ll feel the real difference first.

The truth nobody tells you: the difference between the three is smaller than you initially think. What really changes your skateboarding is the hardness of your bushings. Replace the stock bushings with Bones Hardcore after a few months — you’ll feel like you’ve changed trucks.
