From September 11–13, 2026, the Damn Am rolled its crates into the Sprak, in Louisville, Kentucky. Last stop of the summer for the Skatepark of Tampa amateur series. The result: Brazil’s Carlos Garcia takes the final and the Red Bull Best Trick in the same weekend. But the trophy was never what was actually on the line.

The Louisville podium
Carlos Garcia wins Damn Am Louisville 2026. The Uberaba native, riding for Birdhouse, edges out American Keanu Brown and Florida’s Tyler Kirshenbaum. Twelve finalists dropping in, one name at the top of the sheet.
The detail that jumps out once you read the full list: four of the top eight come from South America or French-speaking Canada. Garcia and Lucas Aquino for Brazil, Joakin Goto for Peru, Guillaume Brunelle for Quebec. At an American contest, in Kentucky, thousands of miles from home.

The Best Trick double, the moment that flipped the weekend

Saturday, September 12, once quals wrapped, the Red Bull Best Trick kicked off at 5 p.m. Simple format: one obstacle, an open session, best trick of the night takes it. Carlos Garcia wins it. Ahead of Joakin Goto and Lucas Aquino — all three South Americans, in that order, on the same sheet.
Twenty-four hours later, he does it again in the final. Two titles in one weekend in Louisville doesn’t happen every year on this series. And for a rider coming out of Minas Gerais, that changes a whole season.
What’s really at stake here isn’t a plastic trophy. At a Damn Am, the crowd includes team managers, filmers, people from Birdhouse or Zero watching to see who holds their tricks under pressure. An am who puts down a banger at Saturday night’s Best Trick, on camera, exists Monday morning in conversations he wasn’t part of on Friday. That’s the real currency of the weekend. Not the placement — getting seen.
Qualifiers: first in quals, twelfth in the final
Saturday midday, qualifiers run jam format: three skaters on the park at once, three minutes, take what you can get. Top fifty move on. The top two skip semis entirely — the famous straight shot.
Nicholas Ramos, out of the Bronx, comes out of quals in first. Carlos Garcia lands right behind him, 2nd. Both grab their straight shot. Twenty-four hours later, Ramos finishes 12th and last in the final, Garcia wins the whole thing. Same park, same guy, two days apart.
That’s the whole trap of this circuit: a jam qual run, you skate it on instinct, you empty the bag for three minutes. A three-run timed final is a completely different mental exercise. Some ams are brilliant at the first and tighten up in the second. The official Skatepark of Tampa video covers quals and the Best Trick — that’s where you see the real level of the day.

Three one-minute runs: the format that forgives nothing

Sunday, the machine speeds up. Semis at noon: 48 survivors from quals, still jam format, two skaters per pass. Ten spots in the final. Add Saturday’s two straight shots and you’ve got your twelve finalists.
3:30 p.m., final. Three one-minute runs per skater, best run only counts. No cumulative scoring, no making it up over time. You can blow two full runs and win on the third. You can also drop a monster run right off the bat and watch the other eleven try to top it for an hour.
It’s a format that rewards one specific thing: holding a full line together under pressure, not pulling one isolated trick. Nothing like the point systems and button-down judges of the pro circuit. Here, you make it or you don’t. Awards at 5 p.m., and everybody heads home.
20 tickets to Tampa: which one actually counts

Here’s the real reason ams cross a continent to skate one weekend in Kentucky. The Damn Am isn’t an end in itself: it’s a hallway. And Louisville was the last stop of the summer, the last shot before the deadline that matters.
The organizer spells it out in black and white: the top twenty at this contest are automatically qualified for the Tampa Am Saturday Qualifier, October 15–18, 2026 at the Skatepark of Tampa. Twenty tickets, then. Not just the podium: all twenty.
Except those twenty tickets aren’t worth the same. Nineteen of them get you the right to skate Saturday quals in Tampa — meaning you run the whole selection process again from scratch, in the deepest park on the amateur circuit, alongside hundreds of guys who made the same trip. The twentieth, the winner’s, is a different animal.
Carlos Garcia walks away with a straight shot into the Tampa Am semifinals. He skips the entire qualifying day. While everyone else burns their legs and their nerves on a full Saturday, he shows up fresh on Sunday, ten runs lighter, with a spot in the last four already locked. That’s what actually counts. Not the trophy: the twenty-four-hour head start.
And Tampa isn’t just another amateur contest. It’s the park where careers get made, inside the same walls as the Tampa Pro, in front of the same brands. An am who makes semis there doesn’t go home the same guy who showed up. Garcia rolls into October with a head start nobody else will have.
The vibe on site looks nothing like a televised contest. The Sprak is a neighborhood park on the north side of Louisville, hot concrete, doors thrown open to September. No official grandstand: the ams sit on the edge of the obstacles between passes, boards across their knees, and holler when a buddy lands something. When a trick goes down, the whole park screams. When it breaks, you hear grip scraping concrete and then nothing.
For the rest of the circuit, the logic doesn’t change: the series already served as a launchpad earlier in the season at Damn Am San Diego, and the South American wave you see here shows up on the Brazilian contests too. See you in Tampa, October 15–18.
