Aurélien Giraud, 17, wins Tampa Am 2015: what did it really open for him?

November 2015, Florida. More than 200 amateurs from all over the world pack into Skatepark of Tampa for the 22nd Tampa Am. In the finals, a kid from Lyon nobody had picked. He's 17, his name is Aurélien Giraud, and he's about to walk out in first place.

The recaps tell the rest in one line: that win opened the doors to Nike, Street League and the Plan B team. Nice story. Except the dates tell a different one. So let's take it from the top, in order.

Tampa Am 2015: 200 amateurs and a French kid nobody saw coming

Tampa Am is the amateur contest everybody watches. Not for the prizes. For what it sets off. Team managers are in the building, so are the cameras, and one good run can change a career in forty-five seconds.

In 2015, TransWorld calls Giraud "the unknown kid from France". Unknown in the States, anyway. In Europe he's already winning: a World Cup in Moscow, Simple Session in Estonia, and the Nike SB Open in Berlin that July, according to etnies' recap. But seen from Florida, Europe is a long way off.

The finals are stacked. Jagger Eaton, 14, already a star among the kids. Tanner Van Vark. Axel Cruysberghs. Jack Olson. Names American brands have been tracking for years.

The overcrook nollie flip that shook the warehouse

Skatepark of Tampa is a warehouse. Not an arena: a shed, the heat, people pressed against the barriers. TransWorld describes a "sweaty warehouse" that erupts the moment Giraud lands his overcrook nollie flip. The run scores 92. Nobody beats it.

Picture it on your phone back then, a 360p clip that loads in stutters. A kid locks his overcrook, pops out in a nollie flip, and the whole room stands up. You replay it. Again. You check the name. French? Yes, French.

Aurelien Giraud Winning Run Tampa Am 2015 — TransWorld Skateboarding

RIDE Channel titles its video "here's how Aurelien Giraud won" and calls it a win "in the most dramatic way imaginable". The video description ends with a shout, in French: "Vive la France!"

Who filmed, who paid: the machine behind the run

We can still watch that run today because three cameras were rolling. Kevin Perez films for TransWorld Skateboarding, which puts the finals online right away. RIDE Channel shoots its SPoT Life series in the room. And the contest streams live on the Skatepark of Tampa webcast.

And the money? It comes out of a can. With the win, Giraud gets the Monster Energy Golden Ticket: a direct spot in the 2016 Street League Pro Open. Not a contract. A ticket. A 17-year-old amateur skipping qualifiers to land among the best-paid pros in the world.

Six years later, in the only free photo of him on Commons, he's wearing a Monster cap. The loop is right there on his head.

Nike, Street League, Plan B: what Tampa really opened

Go back to that opening line: "his win opens Nike, Street League and Plan B". Now put the dates next to it.

Street League, yes, and right away. The Golden Ticket throws him in the deep end in 2016, in Barcelona, for his first appearance. That link is direct: no Tampa, no ticket.

Nike is blurrier. Giraud wins the Nike SB Open in Berlin in July 2015, four months before Tampa. The brand already knows him. He then rides for Nike SB until 2021, when the brand lets go of a good chunk of its skate team, abcskate reports. Tampa mattered, no doubt. But Tampa didn't sign the check on its own.

And Plan B? That's where the story bends. The brand founded by Mike Ternasky, whose 1991 beginnings we covered, only turns him pro in February 2020. Four boards with his name at once. And even then, he had to win Dew Tour 2019 first. Even skate.fr noted at the time that it took a while, given how good he was.

So what did Tampa really open for him? One door, right away: Street League, through a ticket Monster paid for. Nike had been watching since Berlin. And Plan B he went and got himself, contest after contest, for four years. Tampa was the spark. The rest was him.

Today: the kid from the warehouse became the benchmark

Since then, the "unknown kid" became street world champion in 2023 and won Street League in Paris in 2024. In 2026 he joins DC Shoes. His Plan B boards are still around.

And the runner-up in that 2015 final? Jagger Eaton. Ten years later, he's the one winning the pro event in the same building, at Tampa Pro 2026. Today, when a European teenager posts a run on Instagram hoping an American team manager stumbles on it, he's making the exact same bet Giraud made in 2015. Except Giraud had to get on a plane to be seen.

And if you want to see where he goes again this season, check out SLS Paris 2026, the tour's only European stop.
