Taranto 2026: France Sweeps Street Gold, While Three of Eight Men's Finalists Walk Away Without a Single Trick Score

From August 29 to September 2, 2026, the Mediterranean Games rolled their 20th edition into Taranto, down in Puglia. On the street course, two French skaters landed on top: Joseph Garbaccio on the men's side, Lucie Schoonheere on the women's. A double gold that hides a detail more interesting than the podium itself — in the men's final, three skaters out of eight finished with nothing but their run score. Zero trick points. Not one of their two attempts counted.

Men's podium: France locks down the top two spots

Joseph Garbaccio takes it with 170.31 points — the best run of the entire final (86.10, on his third try) stacked on top of his best trick (84.21). Right behind him, another Frenchman: Max Berguin, second with 159.28. The bronze slips just out of France's reach and goes to Spain's Jose Luis Cabarcos Mendez (157.68), who edges out Algeria's Adam Diego Bensalah by less than 3 points.

Why three finalists scored zero trick points

World Skate's street format adds up two things: the best of the timed runs, and the best of the single attempts on one specific obstacle — the "trick." The top five in the men's final all managed to land at least one of their two trick attempts. Not the bottom three. Nogueira do Amaral Teixeira, Gramaglia Fusconi and Dikiscioglu walk away with nothing but their best run score — the trick column on the official sheet sits empty next to their names. In plain terms: they bailed on both attempts, in front of the judges, minutes before the final wrapped up.

That's the brutal mechanics of the format: a run can be solid without being spectacular, but the trick section doesn't forgive anything. Two attempts, one obstacle, no extra warm-up session. Blow both and you instantly lose what usually separates a 5th place from an 8th. On the flip side, Garbaccio built his win on exactly the opposite balance: a run that held up (86.10) and a trick that made the difference (84.21) against competitors who never had to choose between the two.

Women's podium: Schoonheere ahead of two Italians

Lucie Schoonheere pulls off her own personal double — best run (74.88) and best trick (81.33) of the entire women's final, for a total of 156.21. She finishes ahead of Italy's Gaia Urbinati (151.32) and her compatriot Irene Panzavolta (138.17), third. Another French skater, Agathe Gillet, finishes 4th with 128.94 points — so France puts two skaters in the top 4, same as on the men's side.

Taranto, host city of the Games

Taranto is a city split in two by the sea — the Mar Grande on one side, the Mar Piccolo on the other, linked by the channel crossed by the famous Ponte Girevole, a swing bridge that still pivots to let ships through. It's in this Mediterranean setting, between the fortified Città Vecchia and the waterfront, that World Skate set up its street course for this edition of the Games.

The Mediterranean Games bring together the nations bordering the Mediterranean every four years — a regional format, but with a stacked field: the men's final featured six different countries (France, Spain, Algeria, Italy, Portugal, Turkey), proof that the level doesn't drop a notch compared to the big world events.
