EGP 18, Paris — Free and supervised

Impasse des Fillettes, 75018, Porte de la Chapelle metro. 3,000 sq m of free indoor space, a rare thing in Paris. EGP 18 clearly splits the beginner zones from the advanced ones, so you can progress without feeling like you're in everyone's way. Coaches are on site, helmets are loaned out, and you sign up at the front desk (a parent must be present for minors). Open weekday evenings, Saturday 1 to 7 pm and Sunday mornings.

La Halle de Glisse, Lille — The most accessible in the north

80 Rue de Marquillies, 59000 Lille. Recently renovated, this 1,400 sq m indoor park has a section built for beginners: mini-ramp, flat rail, curbs of varying heights, small banks and inclines. Group lessons up to age 17 and school-holiday camps run year round. Pricing is genuinely accessible, between 2.50 and 3.50 euros depending on your age, with gear rental from 2 to 8 euros if you show up empty-handed.

Arsenal Skatepark, Rennes — The downtown spot

Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle, right in the centre of Rennes. The Arsenal is smooth concrete, open access and free, with a bowl and a street section that share the space well. For beginners it ticks the right boxes: approachable modules, a generous flat to work your stance, and a steady crowd you learn from just by watching. Part of it sits under cover, which saves plenty of sessions when the Breton sky turns. No sign-up, you just drop your board and ride.

Gerland Skatepark, Lyon — Simple and effective

Parc de Gerland, Lyon 7th, steps from the Stade de Gerland metro. Set inside a large urban park, this concrete skatepark blends a flowing zone for cruising with progressive modules, perfect for linking your first transitions without pressure. Open access and free, with plenty of room and the park around it to catch your breath between runs. Ideal on a weekend when you want to ride without watching the clock.

Grammont Skatepark, Montpellier — The southern giant

Avenue Albert-Einstein, Grammont district, east of Montpellier. The international Grammont skatepark is one of the largest in France: a huge concrete slab with a bowl, a street plaza and, above all, wide flat areas that are ideal when you're starting out. You can roll quietly off to the side while the regulars carve the bowl, and the southern sun keeps it rideable most of the year. Open access and free.

Prado Skatepark, Marseille — The southern classic

Avenue du Prado, on the seafront, Marseille 8th. The Prado is the coast's great classic, and not just its legendary bowl reserved for the experienced. All around it you'll find modules and a large slab to plant your first moves facing the Mediterranean. Open access, free, and an atmosphere that never stops. A spot where you improve just by hanging around and watching the locals ride.

These six spots give you a solid base to start, from the north to the south of France. The key thing: go often. Skate progress is built on repetition, not theory. You fall, you try again, you move forward, it's that simple.
