How to Choose Your First Skateboard in 2026: Size, Brand, Budget

You want to start skating. You've seen the clips on TikTok, you've watched the tutorials on YouTube, and now there's only one question in your head: which board do you buy?

Problem is, between the $30 boards at the supermarket and the full setups running 200 € on specialty sites, it's a total fog. And nobody wants to end up with the wrong board — especially when your parents are the ones footing the bill.

Here's the straight, honest version. No sponsored fluff. Just what you need to know so you don't blow it.

What deck size to start on — the number that changes everything

The deck (that's the wooden board, just the plank itself) is measured in inches — the width. That's the starting point for everything else.

1. Under 8 inches (7.75″ – 7.875″) — For younger riders with smaller feet (EU 36-40). Easier to land tricks like the ollie or the kickflip early on. Ideal if you're under 16.
2. A straight 8 inches (8.0″) — The perfect middle ground for most beginners. Stable, versatile, you can hit street or the skatepark with zero issues. If you have no clue, get an 8″.
3. 8.25 inches — For bigger riders. More stable, slightly less flickable for tricks.
4. 8.5 inches — For bowl with bigger wheels, or the tallest riders. Max stability.
5. Don't measure your feet, go by your shoe size — EU 41-43: go 8″. EU 44 and up: 8.25″ or 8.5″.
6. Ignore the deck length — Width is the only spec that matters at the start. Length barely varies between brands for a given size.

Deck brands — why you pay more and what you get for it

A good deck is Canadian maple, pressed from 7 plies glued together. That's what gives you the "pop" — the crack and the snap when you smack the tail to do a trick.

Solid brands to start on in 2026: Element, Enjoi, Santa Cruz, Plan B or Primitive. Budget for the deck alone: 50 to 70 €.

If you want a setup that comes built (deck + trucks + wheels + bearings), look at the "completes" at Tactics or at your local skate shop. A decent complete runs around 80 to 120 €. Best bang for your buck when you're starting out.

Trucks, wheels, bearings — what you need to know without drowning in it

Trucks are the metal pieces under the board that hold the wheels. For an 8″ deck, get 139 mm trucks (Independent or Thunder). For an 8.25″, step up to 149 mm.

Wheels: for beginner street and skatepark, aim for 52 to 54 mm in diameter, 99A-101A durometer. Harder = faster on smooth ground. Softer = better on rough asphalt. In the city or at the park, 99A-101A is the sweet spot.

Total budget — what it actually costs

Let's be straight about it:

• Built complete (best beginner option): 80-120 €. You get everything, ready to ride.
• Piece-by-piece setup: deck 55 € + trucks 40 € + wheels 25 € + bearings 18 € + grip 10 € = around 150 €.
• Helmet + pads: a must when you're starting. Budget another 25-40 €.

If money's tight, start with the complete. As you progress and figure out what you want to change, you upgrade whatever's bugging you.

Where to buy your first board

In order of preference:

1. A local skate shop — if there's one near you, go. The people behind the counter can build your setup right there, walk you through the adjustments, and you leave with something dialed in. Plus you're backing an indie shop.
2. Specialty sites — Tactics, Skatepro.fr. Big selection, often cheaper, fast shipping.
3. Big-box stores and general retail sites — avoid completely for skate gear.

And for shoes: Vans Old Skool or Nike SB are the safe bets under 100 €. Flat sole, grip, durability.
